I have a Bachelor and Master Degree in Mathematics from UMass-Amherst.
Upon graduation from UMass in 1978, I accepted a position as Member of Technical Staff at AT&T-Bell Laboratories at their Holmdel, NJ research facility. At Bell Labs I worked in a variety of applied research and product development organizations. During this time I eventually enrolled in a 2-year in-house Software Engineering Master Degree Equivalency program and popped out the other side as a software developer. My Bell Labs employment lasted 18 years (I departed as a Lucent employee post-divestiture) .
After leaving ATT/Lucent, I worked in a number of start-ups, small businesses and enterprises (e.g., Cisco, EMC, Schneider-Electric) developing a diverse range of Software based products and solutions across multiple technology domains ranging from Network Management, Cyber Security, Internet infrastructure, and remote Tele-Medicine.
Since retirement, I returned to my first intellectual passion: Mathematics. More about this below...
The One Big Thing that struck me as I studied Mathematics at UMass was the enormous breath, beauty and universality of its subject matter. It's profound application to all aspects of the natural world and the universe at large, let alone the purity of its logical structure, came as a shock to me. Nothing I experienced in grade school ever hinted at this.; that mathematics was the language through which natural world, music, art, and the cosmos spoke to us at its deepest levels. The ancients appreciated this (sometimes with a religious fervor) but it seemed the translation into popular culture got lost.
Post-retirement, I decided to reacquaint myself with the topic and, where practical, to present college level mathematical topics to a high school audience. The hope was to do this in more than a completely expository fashion (using just words). To be truly useful and of interest (to a motivated high school student or recreational math type) there had to be honest-to-god real mathematical calculations and theorems. I found 4 topics where I felt I was able to accomplish this. Thus the four monographs I published, which available - in either print or PDF format - through this site by scrolling down the home page.
